| The Home was built in 1995 in response to the urgent need of destitute
and homeless elderly who were eking out a meager existence by breaking stones for road
construction, or begging. They were completely alone, in ill-health and without any
self-respect. The Home provides a warm, secure and safe environment to elderly residents from different Himalayan ethnic backgrounds and creeds. Nutritious meals, health care, medication, clothing and a social support system are provided. A very impressive intergenerational component has been added. There are now abandoned children , as well as blind children, living in the Home, creating a lively family ambience. The process of interaction is an important aspect of daily life in the Home the children bring meals to the frail elderly; the elderly look after the children with their advice, stories and general care and they even inspect the childrens clothing before they go to school. Some of the children attend the Jamgon Kongtrul III Memorial School. Expansion is now needed for additional rooms to meet the demand for further residents. |
